Chinese New Year (CNY) or also known as the spring festival is a time when Chinese clock the start of the New Lunar Calendar and it lasts for 15 days. Although it is already the 9th day of CNY today, but it is never too late to share what it is about this festival...
CNY was celebrated before the Qin Dynasty and it is believed that different dynasties have their own calendar to which CNY is celebrated - month 1 during the Xia Dynasty, month 12 during the Shang Dynasty and month 11 during the Zhou Dynasty. It is until then Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty established month 1 as the beginning of CNY. - Wikipedia
There is also a myth saying that there used to be a Man-Eating beast, 'Nian' who comes out to hunt for prey in every 12 months. It was a deadly beast and it caused a number of death. And so, human found out that 'Nian' is afraid of the colour Red and loud noises and that is when people spark firecrackers and wear red to scare off 'Nian'. From then on, Chinese wear red and celebrate this festive season with crackers to scare of evil spirits.
CNY as mentioned, is celebrated for 15 days. It all starts with :
CNY Eve - all family members gather around to have an annual family reunion dinner this day to mark the end of the year and usually there would be a praying procession to the 'God of Fortune' later in the evening
1st Day - this day, people are told not to wash their hair as it will wash their luck and fortune away, it is also a day where people abstain from consuming meat as it is believed that it ensures longevity. Families pay visit to the eldest member of the extended family.
2nd Day - it is a day when married daughters visit their own families, besides that, Chinese would also pray to their ancestors and the Gods. On this day, humans are also asked to treat dogs extra kind as it is believed that it is the day of the dogs.
3rd & 4th Day - it is believed that people shouldn't visit any of their families or friends as it is an inauspicious day to visit. But in modern days, people are less superstitious and wouldn't care much about what is said.
5th Day - on this day, people would pray to the 'God of Wealth' as it is the birthday of the God, it is known as 'Po Wu'
7th Day - the 7th day is known as the day of human or man's birthday, on this day people grows a year older, and there is a tradition saying that 'Yu Sheng', a special dish is eaten on this day for luck and prosperity, this dish is widely eaten in South East Asia such as my country, Malaysia
9th Day - it is the birthday of the Jade Emperor or God of Heaven, Hokkiens pray to this God as thanksgiving. Sugarcane is used when praying because it is believed that the cane saved the Hokkiens from exterminations ages ago.
13th Day - people are encouraged to consume simple food such as congee on this day after eating oily and rich food for the past few days of the CNY
15th Day(Chap Goh Mei) - it is the last day of the CNY and it is also known as the 'Valentine's Day' of the Chinese. Glutinous rice are eaten on this day for togetherness. On this day, females who are single and who is also looking for a life partner would take this opportunity to jot their personal details on mandarin oranges to throw into lakes and ponds while single men would net them up to contact the other party.
Things that Chinese would relate during CNY are :
Red Packets (money packets) - given by elders or married couples to unmarried singles, the amount given is usually even numbers as odd number is unlucky.

Before i start typing my blog, i'm going to say that this piece would not be a very delighting one.
Humans have feelings and i used to think that i could control how i feel in 'Just a Heart Beat'. It is true , but supressing it would make things even worse. I know it is impossible to please everyone. If this continues, it might cause disorders. I think i have to deal with this before things turn out to be serious ...
I always have in mind that i don't really care how people would regard me, but indeed i mind. Constatntly thinking about what are in the minds of the people. Why should i care about how they feel when there are people who don't. You would tend to get tired by time because this is not 'YOU'. Having everything inside you that may cause a major disruption in life ... Don't try to pity me, i don't buy that ... don't try to be nice to make me feel better because that would only make it even worse !!!
I try not to be emotional and sensitive, but this is not the fact. The truth is i am. I'm very unsure about things and the future, about myself ... basically everything. People say, this is a phase and you would grow out of it. It is easy to say but it is not easy to do so. I am very sick of being worried about stuffs that i shouldn't be worrying about. Thinking too much ... Life is a challenge ... YES ... so i should just wait for things to screw and then mend it later ...
I finally figured out that being realistic is good in life, without being cruel, you would not survive in this harsh world. Damn it ... !!!
Instead, i should just end everything that does not make me feel good ... by this, it can make my life easier ... say whatever you like but this is my life and this is how i want it to be ... THE END !!!

Chinese New Year is around the corner and everyone is flocking into barbers and saloons just to get a better and fresher look for the new year ... not forgetting about myself too ... people are willing to pay for a higher price although it has increased by at least 20% ... would you rather invest on your hair or risk showing bad hair to relatives and friends???

It is the time of the year again where people immerse themselves in sweet red or pink, giving out flowers, candies, love cards and writing love poems for their loved ones. This festival is widely celebrated in the 17th century where people exchange small gifts to show thier affection and appreciation for friends and lovers.
So why is this day known as Valentine?
From this www.history.com it is stated that Valentine's Day is a day celebrated in the name of St. Valentine. Valentine was a priest who served the Roman empire during the 3rd century. It all started when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men make better soldiers and that is when he forbade potential soldiers to get into any relationships or marriages. Valentine who is against this idea, helped young lovers to get together secretly. Unfortunately, his action was discovered and he was ordered to be sentenced.
While he was in prison, he fell deeply in love with a girl who came to visit him during confinement. It was believed that Valentine himself sent the first Valentine greeting. He wrote the girl a love letter confessing his deep thoughts and feelings towards her before his death by ending it with ' From your Valentine', a term still widely used until today. This is how everything started.
Valentine's day is not only a celebration for lovers but people who love each other - friends and families. We mustn't set stereotypical mindsets thinking that Valentine is only for people who are in a relationship or otherwise relationship's'. Nevertheless, love shouldn't be showered only on this day but throughout the year. Many people regard this as a day to impress. Those who are better off at words would sweet talk away thier love ones while some choose to load them with gifts. I always believe that' Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder', and no matter what you do he/she would definitely be touched by it, as ' Love is Blind'.
Everyone has a (at least) love story. You do, I do. Sweet or sour, interesting or boring ... but it will always remain as a part of our life. Make this Valentine a good and meaningful one!
