So ... since it is the Mid-Autumn Festival, i went around to look for the meaning and legends behind this romantic festival ...
I didn't know that the Mid-Autumn Festival is the Chinese version of Thanksgiving. It is celebrated after the end of the harvest season, when people throw a great fiesta for what they have achieved. But this is only one of the reason people celebrate. It is widely celebrated during the Tang Dynasty .
Some people also call it the Mooncake Festival, as many would relate it to the mooncake. It goes back to the old days where the Mongolians fought and defeated the Song Dynasty. Chinese people suffer during the rule of the Mongolians under Yuan Dynasty and that is when people thought of defending themselves so as to fight for a better life. In order to do so, they have to pass the message around, but it is impossible because the message of this would reach the Mongolians like wild fire, so they inserted small slits of papers in the middle of the mooncake saying on when to strike. That is on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar. It worked as the Mongolians don't eat mooncakes. Perhaps Mongolians have a more healthier diet than the chinese do, or maybe they think it is too sissy for them to eat cakes. Duh ...
Besides the true fact, there are also legends about this festival. People believe that the moon is at his brightest and roundest during that night(given if it is not cloudy). The moon is not left out from this festival. From legend, we know that there are 3 livings in the moon. That is a woman, a man and a rabbit. It all started when Hou Yi is given the task to shoot down 9 suns out of 10 by the Emperor of Heaven because it was causing excessive heat to the earth. He suceeded in doing so, but the evil inside him caused him to steal the elixir of life from a goddess. Hou Yi wanted to rule the world and be immortal but unfortuantely his wife Chang Er drank it, and she felt lighter and floated in to the air and landed on the moon. Hou Yi loved his wife and decided not to shoot the moon down and that is why Chang Er stays on the moon. I wonder if Chang Er is too thirsty or she might mistook it by alcohol as she was an alcoholic?! Cold joke ...
Wu Kang, a man who is always uncertain of the things he want in life looked for a immortal to teach him the ways to be an immortal. He got fed up with all the things he learnt in a very short period of time and this caused the rage in the immortal. So, he decided to send him off to the moon giving him a mission to chop down a big cassia tree before he can return to earth. The tree restored itself and it is until now he is still up there. If trees can survive on the moon, i bet humans would get all excited about it and go Cuckoo ...
One day, 3 fairies transform themselves into an old and hungry man and went begging for food from 3 animals - a fox , a monkey and a rabbit. Both the fox and monkey gave the old man food but the rabbit who hasn't any sacrificed himself by jumping into the hot cauldron to offer his meat to the old man. Touched by the act, the fairies let the rabbit to stay in the Moon Palace. So, this is why you can sometimes see pictures of a rabbit in front of mooncake boxes. I think the rabbit wanted to run away from the old man by jumping over but misfortunately, it is not as smart as bugs bunny. Too bad ... it turned into rabbit soup.
This Mid-Autumn Festival, is regarded as a day for lovers as people light up candles and bring their lanterns along the street under the sky of glittering stars and the shining moon. It is also a time for people to get over old conflicts and to forgive. It is a meaningful and important day for chinese people throughout the world. Chinese worship the moon more than the sun like the westerners do. Moon is like a lady, soft, tender and romantic unlike the sun. So that is why we call it "Yin Yang" and not "Yang Yin". "Yin" refering to female and "Yang" to the male. Notice that?
Even my dog eats mooncake. We have a tradition of buying extra food so as to feed everyone to their fullest. This includes the mooncake. Every year we buy mooncakes in boxes but what do we do if we can't finish consuming? We freeze it and would take it out the following year for our dog to eat. Isn't it good, not wasting any food and yet bringing the mood to the dog. Wonderful!!!
I called my friends who are studying in Cambridge to wish them a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival but it seems like they have forgotten when is it. They told me about things going on in their life. I was a little surprised when one of my friend(female) told me that they were given condoms. 2 condoms, a normal one for normal sex and an extra strong one for anal sex. Whoa! Besdies that, they are also given lubricants to hype up. Who knows what! : P They even handed out guide books and manual to them and reminded them that even lesbian sex may cause HIV. Hmm ... That is not it, we were always talking about cucumbers and carrots as dildos, but this time, they are using it for demonstration as how to wear a condom. Goodness ... why not eggplants ???
There is also a club in their college called the "Romance Club", it is only for singles. Their activities includes, speed dating and meeting people of interest. I wonder if they have such clubs in Malaysia's universities. Maybe i should set one up, one day. But towards the end of the day people are still humans and we need companionship.
Wishing all a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival ...
